I’ve got writer’s block, so I figured I’d share an email that made an otherwise crappy day feel somehow fulfilling.
“Since I started playing World of Warcraft, I have been a hunter. I just love it. Pets allowed me to accomplish difficult tasks without the aid of others, and feel DAMN good about myself. And because I liked my pet so much, I went Beast Mastery. Every goddamn point. What did I care, I was just levelling. I never thought I’d start raiding, be at the same level in skill as the best players in my guild. But eventually I started raiding, as Beast Mastery. And I was okay. Not great. Okay. I’d never raided before, it was all new to me. New and exciting. I got better gear (God the Envoy of Mortality is nice.), and though the other hunters increased greatly in their DPS, I didn’t. I was doing the same thing I’d always done. I scaled somewhat with gear, but I didn’t know how to work my spec properly. I’m friends with the physical DPS captain irl, and I was out for a walk with him the other night when he told me that I could be the guild’s top DPS if I really tried. If I had a good spec, figured out how to use it properly, my gear was already great. So I thought “Okay, I’ll give it a shot”.
I spent the afternoon researching specs, and found that all the raiding hunters in my guild were Survival. Naturally I had to see what the big deal was about. So I respecced. Then I did more research, and respecced again. I’d been Beast Mastery since I started (with about a week of Marksmanship.), so it was all new to me. I respecced about three times, then I stumbled across your blog. The advice you gave to that other player, especially about the Lock and Load procs, I took it to heart, and I changed my spec yet again.
Tonight we went in to face Three Drake Sartharion. Unfortunately, we did take the bastard down, as we were missing two of our best healers, but I was all too excited to test out the new spec. And in one night, having never played it before, I was in the top five DPS, and ahead of all of the other hunters, who had been specced Survival for much longer. I even had one ask me advice on how I was getting my Lock and Loads off so fast, and I told him the advice from your blog. Top hunter DPS on my first night with the new spec.
I just wanted to email you and say thank you. Your advice was the key to pushing me above all of the other hunters and making my raid spot in Ulduar a sure thing. So thank you, sir. Thank you.”
Yay! Welcome :)
