Well, the original has changed enough that it’s time for a redo of my guide to the DPS spreadsheet (download link). New screenshots, new features, more awesomeness!
Opening the spreadsheet
When you start up, you might get this (or some variation of it):
If you do, you need to go into your “tools” menu, click on “macros”, and then “security”.
Then you’ll see this. Change your security settings to medium, and click ok. This means that from now on, Excel will always ask you before executing a macro. Don’t ever say yes to this if you don’t know the file or there’s any possibility that there’s a virus in it.
Now close the file, and reopen it. You’ll now be greeted with something like this message asking if you want to allow the spreadsheet to run macros. The answer is “Enable macros”.
Using the spreadsheet
Now we go to the “overview” tab and we’re presented with this. You want to take a look at the stuff I’ve highlighted in red- specifically character name and realm, and profiles. If you want multiple profiles, you just name them all here. Also, verify your glyphs (not saved per profile), and change one (or more) of the names of the specs you plan to use.
Next up we go to the “Gear” tab and select the profile we’ll be importing first. I picked the one named “Euripides SV”.
Over to the right of the same tab (Gear), we’ll want to click on “import”. This should pull all your gear in from the armory. If you have gear on that Shandara has not yet put into the spreadsheet, it will not show up.
Now you should go down the list and add stuff you are missing. In my case, I have the mats for my massacre 2-hander enchant, but I’m waiting for my guild enchanter and I to cross paths. I added it in manually. You might have gear on that doesn’t import from the armory (some caster stuff and greens, mostly). If there’s holes from the import, select “custom” and we’ll go and add the stats manually later. Once that’s done, click “save profile”
Now we go to the next tab, “Talents”. Here we will start off with clicking the “read from armory” button to bring in your current talent tree. Then you go over to that little thing almost off the side of my screen and select the name you chose for you spec. I picked a boring descriptive one, but you could have named it “MM spec of impending doom!!!!” instead. Once your spec is the way you want it and your spec name has been selected, click on “save spec”. Also, note that if you want to use a different spec than the one your character currently has on, you can copy-paste a link from wowhead or the blizzard talent calculator in a little area near the bottom of the talents tab.
Next up, the Buffs tab. This is where you tell the DPS calculator which buffs you have and debuffs your target has. Again, everything here has a name that you specified in the overview tab. The default is 25 man buffs, which is basically everything. That’s not actually feasable in real life- I suggest that you run your standard raid comp through mmo-champion’s raid composition tool and see what you really get. This tab is where you specify the food and flasks you use too- if you’re using hit food to get capped, make sure you specify that or it will assume you’re using agility food.
Now we’re off to the Shot Rotation tab. Here you simply adjust it to the rotation you use. The one I picked is the highest DPS for survival (I think), but since this is not attached to a profile, you’ll have to manually switch this around to compare two profiles with different secs.
Now to the Pet tab! Here we pick the pet we use (a wolf is the most DPS for all but beast masters), and then enter the spec in. The default is the most DPS, but I have mine customized a little. Also, verify that the ability priority is what you want. Special before focus dump.
The next tab is where we go back to that custom gear I mentioned you’ll need if some of the gear you wear isn’t in the database. Look up the missing gear on wowhead or something and manually enter in all the stats. They will only be applied to slots you selected “custom” for in the gear tab.
Lastly, we go back to the overview tab, and click on the “CalcAttributes” button to the right. This will update the DPS value per point of all the stats we get. You see that hit is worth 1.64 DPS for me, and agility is worth 1.52 DPS. Your numbers will be different.
Now you can do things like look at best in slot lists from the gear planner. The yellow below and red in the list is what you have. Delta means how much DPS you gain or lose. The top allows you to exclude content you don’t have access to.
There you have it! Easy peasy, and updated to boot! Ask questions here if you have them!
Quick noob question here… do I just “save” all this like I would save a regular Excel sheet? For instance, if I need to save this periodically as I enter information, will anything be lost that I would have to update every single time I open the spreadsheet?
Thanks for any info!
You can just save it if you want to keep working on that version, but in theory (and I’ve only tested this once), you can save your settings and import them to a new version using the export button. The one time I tried this, the very next version I downloaded was incompatible with my output. I know this is not a representative sample, but I do know that Shandara is more interested in making the spreadsheet work than keeping the output file formats compatible.
Bah, when I try to click on a button (Reset Gear, Import from Armory etc.) nothing happens. btw I use Openoffice…
Openoffice is not supported. This spreadsheet is basically a complex program written in MS Office scripting languages that uses a spreadsheet as an input-output device. You’ll have access to the spreadsheet with OO, but not the logic scripted into the XLS file.
Do you have access to a computer running a version of Microsoft excel? Office 2003 and 2007 work for sure, and I think office XP works too.
It can be downloaded at [censored]
[ed note: I put the original link in the post. Don’t download the file from sources you don’t know]
I downloaded it onto my Mac and it’s asking me to provide a password for this spreadsheet…was wondering what it was?
Also, I went to the Gear tab and I cannot change profiles or press the Import button as well as any of the buttons on that page. I think all the buttons don’t work.
Sorry, but I’m fairly sure that it only works on windows office.
I tried opening the spreadsheet in Excel 2007. When I try to edit any cell (put in the values pertaining to my character) it tells me that the spreadsheet is protected and requires a password. Is there someway around this?
I tried lowering my macro security, closing the file, and opening it again (as suggested above) however this did not solve the issue I am having. Any suggestions? Thanks.
I’ve never seen that bug… and unfortunately (or fortunately, I guess) I don’t use office 2007. Maybe you should search for this in the DPS Spreadsheet thread over at elitist jerks. Someone else might have had the same problem… if not, try asking there.

Same as some of the others. Can’t put stuff in because of it being Pass Word Protected. Can U supply that?
On Shot Rotation, U have Kill Shot as #1. Why? According to what I know, Kill Shot isn’t available until the Mob is down to 20% of health or less.
Still working on getting the Spread Sheet to totally work. Looks good so far.
If you are using ms word, the only way you should get that error is if you are trying to edit something outside the normal area- the guts of the spreadsheet as it were. If you don’t have access to this (office costs money) I’d suggest you try out the online DPS calculator: http://www.femaledwarf.com
As for kill shot, it is always the highest priority shot when it’s usable. That’s why it’s first on the list.
I found the guide useful, however the spreadsheet useless. Unfortunately there is NO support in it for Oceanic servers which means I can’t even use the spreadsheet. Thanks for taking the time to write this guide, I guess I will have to try to figure out my rotations another way.
You might be able to get some use out of the http://www.femaledwarf.com site- see my guide here. If that doesn’t let you import, you can always just manually drag and drop your gear and talents.
Great guide, but how (or can you) turn off the “Current Item with Regem” from showing in the gear planner?
Not sure how it actually even works because it says current items should be regemmed that don’t even have gem slots.
Same question. I’m getting the “Current Item with Regem” on trinkets and socketless items…
OK, so I input all of my stats, rotation, gear, etc, and have a similar SV rotation as yours, but for some reason when I do a “Test Rotation,” the only shots it will fire are Serpent, Steady, and Multi – no Explosive or Black Arrow.
Any pointers?
That is really weird- I never played around with the rotation test much, but double check your profiles- see if there’s a dropdown box somewhere pointing to another profile you aren’t using.
Does any1 know why it does not load all pvp gear such as Furious Hunter Gear
because pvp gear is not good for pve. If you need to see how bad it is, you can manually enter the stats :)
Is there a way to find out how to gem properly for Furious gear and enchants. I am a PVE Hunter and dnt know to much about pvp just starting.I Researched found a good spec, but all Hunters are differnt from gemming to Attack Power to Raw Agility. Some hunters gem straight resielence. Also, Elisit Jerks has not made a forum on PVP Hunters mostly PVE. the spreadsheet i assumed would help me with PVP, when now i guess it relies on PVE.
i think i just found the answer to my own question. I looked above and theres a section on pvp. This site is just Great! Sorry for incovience.
The guide is great, I do however have a question on the gear tab, there is an additional row called gear bonus/proc, just curious what is entailed in that as it adds agility to my total buffed agility and I don’t know where its coming from. so its currently giving me +95 agil. any information would be greatly appreciated
I have pretty good dps but i don’t know how to get it higher i am MM/SV but i suck at SV. I have been MM since level 1. I know the Spec very well, but i can’t get my dps above3.5k one mob. in a raid it can be at 4k my gear score 4647 shot rotation on a mob is
hunter’s mark serpent sting chimera shot silencing shot (free dps) aimed shot arcane shot then steady until it something better is up
it,s very effective. I playing in Korea, so i transfer to Korean – for introduce Korean Gamer.
But sheet locked T.T
Would you mind pw send me? Please..
Awesome Guide Shandara! I have been using the spreadsheet for years now and it is amazing. I have one question though. Maybe I missed it but on the Gear tab and in the weapons section, what is the (H) for behind the weapons? is that for 2-handers? Thank you and keep up the great work!
It stands for “Heroic” as in the heroic version of the item.
[…] here is an excellent guide for using Shandara’s […]
Optimizer don´t work.
I load just my gear and two new Items. If i choose them manuel Excel shows me more dps. But the optimizer dont chance the Gear!!
